As much as I love getting dressed up, I just as much enjoy putting on a pair of sneakers and a hat to go out on an adventure! Sometimes it feels as though we don’t have much in Illinois to venture to outside of the city of Chicago but I am here to tell you we do have some hidden gems. It may require a day trip or some extra driving but who doesn’t love a little road trip?
One of the items on our bucket list this summer was to go on a hike so we can officially cross one thing off our list! Hector and I went to Starved Rock once before when we first started dating more than 3 years ago but when we went, the majority of the trails were closed due to a big storm a couple days before. We always said we would have to go back so this weekend, we finally made it happen!
A state park, Starved Rock is about 1 hour and a half from Chicago. There’s plenty to do there like kayaking, hiking up endless trails, picnicking, and even staying in some adorable cabins at their lodge. I would love to go back in the fall because I’m sure with all the trees it’s absolutely beautiful.
When we arrived, we went to the visitor’s center to pick up a map and the guide there told us where to hike to see one of their better waterfalls. We took his advice and it really was a hike! There are so many beautiful canyons, rivers, and viewing points that you can’t help but stop along the way and take photos. It took us at least 2 or 3 hours total to get to the waterfall and make our way back. It was so worth it though. The trail led to a beautiful waterfall and there were plenty of people making their way in and cooling off. By the time we were done hiking we both agreed we really wanted a cold beer and a burger. We ended up stopping at the lodge to do just that!
We had a great time and agreed even staying next time would be fun to see more of the park. You definitely need more than one day to check out all the trails. Either way, I’m looking forward to crossing off the next summer adventure on our bucket list!
